Neustadt Tour

Dresden seen from a different perspective, apart from Frauenkirche, Zwinger and the Canaletto panoramic view - casual, spontaneous, with a more personal touch… just like with friends… “Let’s offer an individual IndieVans tour,” everyone agreed when we talked about our city over a hot drink in our favorite bar Cafe Combo in the end of 2016. Just a few weeks later, we turned this idea into reality and created the Neustadt Tour. But why Dresden Neustadt? Because this is the most vibrant part of Dresden, the neighborhood that has become our home. Off the beaten tourist track, you will discover the quarter north of the Elbe river in our chuggling vintage van Horst. Once a working class neighborhood, it is now a fascinatingly diverse quarter with cobble stone streets, countless bars, cafes, clubs, arts and more. We will show you our favorite places that make you feel the special atmosphere of Dresden Neustadt. In small groups of up to seven people you will get a personalized insight into our neighborhood in about 2 hours. During the tour, we can adapt the route to your individual wishes and will drop you off at Dresden Neustadt station afterwards.

When Daily tours on request
Starting point Dresden Neustadt station, Schlesischer Platz (in front of the Europcar building)
Tour length ca. 2 hours
Route Inner and Outer Neustadt, including stops, short guided walks and a picnic at selected sights (typical Dresden drinks and pastries)
Languages English/German (French on request)
Arrival point Dresden Neustadt station
Prices Single ticket: 45 € per person
Private tour: 249 € including driver and guide (up to 7 people in VW van “Horst”, up to 6 persons in Barkas van “Norbert”)

Grand Dresden Tour

On the “Grand Dresden tour” we focus on Dresden Old Town and its history. You will get to know the exciting past of Dresden, illustrated on the best sights of Dresden Old Town … During a short walk along the mural “The Princes’ Procession” and to Frauenkirche our guides will tell you little anecdotes and big myths that make Dresden’s past and present come to life. The second part of the tour takes you out of the center to some beautiful, but lesser known places along the southern side of the Elbe, where the city offers yet another perspective. Our guides will show you their favorite places and bring the tour to a close whilst having a picnic on the Elbe river banks. In order to make this tour a special experience, the groups are limited to a maximum of 7 persons. Of course we can adapt the tour to your individual wishes. After the 2 hour tour we will drop you of at the starting point next to Dresden Neustadt station.

Our Guides

Jule
Favourite place the Prießnitz creek mouth and the cherry tree area on the Elbe banks
Insider's tip „Ogura“ - a traditional, japanese restaurant, hidden in the Hilton hotel next to Frauenkirche

Jule lives in the Hecht neighborhood, the “little brother” of Dresden Neustadt. As a freelancing drama teacher, she works on independent theatre projects and teaches acting to children and adolescents.

Dresden is a city of contrast that has a lot more to offer than just Semper Opera, Frauenkirche and negative media attention. I would like to focus on that “other Dresden” during the tour through Dresden Neustadt.

Jule
Christina
Favourite place The “nymph’s bath” fountain in the Dresden Zwinger (very appealing to me as a native Greek)
Insider's tip „Little India“ at Louisenstraße, down-to- earth atmosphere, spicy and extremely delicious food

Christina was born in Berlin, grew up in Athens, went to university in Würzburg and has lived in Dresden for 14 years now. She was raised bilingual, then studied German and art history. She works as freelance journalist and Dresden guide in German, English and Greek.

Some customers visit Dresden for a few hours, others for several days, and some have even lived here for years. It’s my ambition to make the tour fun and interesting for all of them. I love it when my customers remember small details and keep a happy memory of the tour – that’s when I know I have done a good job.

Christina
Maria
Favourite place Dresden’s rubble mountain in the Ostragehege – a green spot with a great view, perfect for picnics
Insider's tip Eat at the (mostly) vegetarian restaurant ”Brennnessel“, located in a former farmhouse, Schützengasse 18

After moving to Dresden 14 years ago, Maria has lived in many neighborhoods until she found her home in Dresden Neustadt. Apart from taking a vintage van, her favorite means of transportation is cycling, so you might most probably see her on her bike in her free time. She works as a freelance tourist guide in Dresden and studies to become an English teacher.

Exploring Dresden with a vintage van is simply fun: we can access parts of Dresden that are too far for a walking tour. There’s enough time to get off the van and take a look at details. Plus, you get in the feel for vintage cars, meet nice customers in small groups, have some picknick on the Elbe river banks... all in all, IndieVans is dream come true for a Dresden guide ;)

Jan
Favourite place Dresden Heide forest
Insider's tip Bouldering center „Mandala“, situated in the industrial area north of Neustadt

Jan is IndieVan’s founder and manager who originally comes from Germany’s north Mecklenburg. He has been living in the Hecht neighborhood, next to Neustadt, for a few years now and turned his passion for VW campers into a profession.

I have dreamed of doing guided tours in our vans for years. The dream has come true and I can’t wait to chauffeur our customers in “Horst” and “Norbert trhough my home of choice!

Jan
Paul
Favourite place Dresden industrial area north of Neustadt
Insider's tip Dürüm-Kebab-Haus ( try Nr. 74, Halloumi-Spinat-Dürüm, a very tasty kebab!)

Paul is a jazz musician and lives in Dresden Neustadt. After spending some time in Berlin he moved back to his native city Dresden a few years ago.

My hometown Dresden has received some negative media attention in recent years. That’s why it is important to me to show you my side of Dresden which is welcoming and diverse, and what’s more, it is a beautiful city!

Our Mechanics

Axel
Favourite place Das Areal an der Elbe vom Staudengarten bis zur Prießnitzmündung
Insider's tip Vegan restaurant „Steffenhagen“, Schönfelderstr. 2

Axel has worked at IndieVans from the very beginning. Using his enormous knowledge about cars he takes care of our vintage vans “Horst” and “Norbert”, making sure they have everything they need to keep on chuggling.

Turning my passion for VW vans and campers into a job is a dream come true. I have always been fascinated by the individuality of the busses and the people who take them on the road.

Axel
Christoph
Favourite place Rose Garden park on the northern Elbe river banks
Insider's tip Adventure playground „Panama“ in Dresden Neustadt

Christoph has been our fleet manager since spring 2016 and he is responsible for the availability and intactness of the vans for rentals and guided tours.

My team and I take care of the unique vehicle fleet with a great passion and meticulousness. Doing this job, I can work off my fascination for these special vans day by day.

Horst

Vita

VW van “Horst” saw the light of day in the VW factory Hannover on 1 November 1977. After having toured Europe he joined the IndieVans family in spring 2016. Growing accustomed to his new environment in Dresden, he soon found friends in his fellow T2 vans “Jolle”, “Amelie” and “Bruno”. He’s especially fond of “Amelie” ;)

Inner qualities

  • original 4-stroke boxer engine
  • proud 50PS
  • 9 seats in total (chauffeur, guide plus 7 guests)

Favorite pastime

  • relaxing and enjoying mechanic Axel’s loving care and maintenance
  • romantic drives at sundawn with “Amelie”
  • thirst-quenching at the petrol tap ;)

Norbert

Vita

Barkas van “Norbert” came into life on 13 April 1970 in Karl-Marx- Stadt (now Chemnitz) in the former GDR. Being the Eastern counterpart to Volkswagen’s T2 he got registered in the Dresden “Valley of the Clueless” and retired early after the fall of the Berlin wall. In the mid-1990s he went on an extensive trip exploring the states of reunified Germany and then returned to Dresden via Potsdam in 2017. After joining the IndieVans family he had a few problems getting used to the team, feeling a little lonely as the only Eastern guy among all the VW vans. But since T2 “Horst” have become best buddies, no one in the workshop can imagine a life without “Norbert”.

Inner qualities

  • original Wartburg two-stroke engine
  • fresh 46 PS
  • 8 seats in total (chauffeur, guide plus 6 guests)

Favorite pastime

  • enjoying an extensive engine maintenance by mechanic Christoph
  • racing with buddy “Horst“
  • “dressing up” for Sunday trips
